EDUCATION AT EVIDENCE
Central to EVIDENCE’s mission is education, a notion embedded deep in the company’s name. In conceiving the company, Brown wanted to tell the stories of his grandmother and his neighbors growing up in Brooklyn, and see a reflection of their experiences in his work, in the studio, and on stage.
Over the past four decades, EVIDENCE has provided a home, training ground and source of employment to countless dance professionals.
Designed to increase access to the arts and to teach children and adults about cultural heritage and tradition, the Company’s education directives are achieved through intergenerational community classes for dancers and non-dancers alike. From classes at Restoration Youth Arts Academy, a program of the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, to community workshops while on tour, the company provides cultural connection points to audiences in every region visited. Monthly virtual technique classes make EVIDENCE’s programming accessible to populations around the world. While the Company’s annual Summer Dance Intensive focuses on training dancers in Brown’s contemporary technique, giving pre-professional and early career dancers the opportunity to learn repertory in a vigorous rehearsal setting.
