We could not be here if it were not for the many dancers, advisors, teachers, Board Members and supporters who have contributed so graciously. From the first concert in June 1985 EVIDENCE, A Dance Company at Mary Anthony Dance Studio to this moment at The Joyce Theater I have hoped that the work we share speaks to each one who encounters the dance and music we share.
This year, there are two programs that feature a range of work from the most recent dances to some repertory that has not been seen in over ten years. I am excited to have Jason Moran and The Bandwagon perform live in The Subtle One (2014) as well as the company premiere of Why You Follow (2014), commissioned by The Joyce Theater Foundation for MalPaso. Evidence will also perform a duet March (1995) and Grace (1999), originally commissioned and performed by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
There are two statements/challenges that help steer the move forward to create Evidence, A Dance Company and that helped shape these performances. First, prior to performing Evidence, when I would attend poetry readings of the late Audre Lorde (1934 – 1992) she would ask the audience “Are you doing your work?” I realized that the my work would be to create dance as physical storytelling. The second was the advice I received from the late Bessie Schonberg (1906 – May 1997) “Don’t give in to the pressure to always do something new, make sure people know where you have come from”. I believe that the dances Evidence offers this year illustrate the work and the history of the company and grateful for each person who has made this day come true.
Looking forward to an amazing year.
Faithfully forward,
